A best-kept secret for walkers

Portugal offers a unique flavour to the traveller and explorer alike

Just an hour and a half north of Lisbon and one hour from Porto airport, our base near the picturesque town of Penela is situated amid unspoilt Portuguese countryside. It’s easy to reach but still one of the country’s best-kept secrets and a haven for walkers.

Penela is located at the heart of Portugal, in the Beira Litoral region, which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Spanish border in the east.

Far from the hustle and bustle of the country’s tourist destinations, you’ll find a vast network of quiet walking tracks that meander over farmlands, through woodlands, alongside olive groves and vineyards and head to the cobbled streets of enchanting white-washed villages.

Penela itself is a hillside market town, built around a stunning  castle, and dating back to medieval times. It is a beautiful place with great charm and historical interest.

Other attractions include fabulous cuisine, delicious wines, historic sites, diverse and plentiful wildlife and the nearby city of Coimbra, once the capital of Portugal.

When to visit central Portugal

Spring is a particularly lovely time,  when the meadows are bursting with a colourful and highly scented array of wild flowers and herbs.

The region also boasts dry, warm summers when fields, plants and trees ripen into a lush greenness.

And in autumn, when many fruits ripen, this part of Portugal is fortunate to enjoy warm days under bright blue skies.
