This made us smile: Walking holiday praise
Walking holiday in Portugal
Janet and Martin, from Australia, incorporated a week with Walking Portugal as part of a 10-week cruise holiday of a lifetime.
Janet says: “We wanted to visit a part of Europe that we hadn’t been to before. We also like to keep fit and thought that Walking Portugal offered just what we were looking for. The combination of exercise, visits to interesting places and relaxation seemed ideal for us. And we were right.”
The couple reported that they enjoyed everything about the guided walking holiday, including the airport transfers, accommodation, food, walks and trips.
Janet said: “The accommodation was a very high standard and we really liked the food in the hotel restaurant but we also enjoyed going out to local restaurants and meeting the local people. In addition, we found the staff in the hotel charming and helpful.”
Great walks in Portugal
Martin was particularly interested in the Conimbriga walk (see walk 1 in the holiday programme). Janet says: “Martin spotted the walk to the Conimbriga Roman Settlement site when we were looking for a European walking holiday and so Walking Portugal immediately appealed.
“I enjoyed all the walks but I thought that the Rabacal Valley walk (walk 4) was particularly pretty. I loved the olive groves, vineyards and lovely stone walls. I was amazed that everywhere was so green and full of wild poppies and other wild flowers. We loved smell the scent of wild herbs.
“Overall, I enjoyed the walks because we found that for us the pace and length of the walks were perfect at around four to five hours, which gave us time in the afternoons to relax and enjoy the gorgeous hotel.
“Having guided walks took the stress out of the walking holiday because we did not need to find maps or routes. We also enjoyed the company of the other people in the group although we could have walked separately if we wished.”
Peter was praised by Janet and Martin for his “quietly spoken charm”. Janet says: “Peter went out of his way to make the walks pleasant and interesting. He chats to everyone and is very knowledgeable of the area and is particularly good at pointing out and naming the local bird-life.”
The couple also enjoyed the day out in Coimbra. Janet says: “We found this university city teeming with life and activity. I loved the architecture as well as shopping in the chic boutiques that sold fabulous clothes and gorgeous handmade Portuguese shoes.”
In all the one-base holiday perfectly suited the couple’s requirements. Janet says: “I liked being based in the same hotel without the need to pack and repack every day like on many walking trips. I would definitely recommend Walking Portugal to others.”
